From Doctor to DJ

Behind every dream worth living is a great story and therein lies my quest to becoming a seriously Badass Mutha-Trucker DJ among other things.  I’ve done the whole education thang, First Year of Uni at Otago University, gap year lol then my Second First year of Uni, this time at Auckland University. I finally graduated in 2008 but had zero desire whatsoever to pursue a “career” in Health Sciences after bombing out of my first dream to become a doctor. *Cue violins.

So anywho, I decided to venture with one of my sisters to Canada on a Working Holiday in 2009 and was fortunate enough to score a job with Cirque du Soleil as a Merchandise Assistant.  It truly is magical and awe-inspiring and I can appreciate how much work goes into such a massive scale production.

Making new friends, one who graciously allowed me to share her photo (thanks again Sara:)) and being part of something creative that inspires greatness in others, made it such an enriching experience.

I was inspired by a mere t-shirt slogan that really resonated with me.  “Osez Rever! “Dare to Dream!” from none other than big dreamer himself, Guy Laliberte, founder and CEO of Cirque du Soleil. This “Guy” evidently just happened to be making his way to The International Space Station while I was restocking the merch area in one of his shows.

It wasn’t however, all Cirquey and magical on our working holiday. Two months prior we were on a plain old NOT-working holiday with a bit of time on our hands.  It did however allow me to evaluate where I was in life and inspired some A-ha/Take on Me moments.  I decided then and there that I would start plotting towards doing something I LOVED doing, and extricating myself from the Rat Race!  One of my absolute LOVES is Music, at the moment expressing it through DJing, and I intend to continue learning every aspect of the craft.

Three years on and I have finally taken action.  I scored a pair of Technics 1200s last year and jam on my cousin’s (the vamp on right) gears whenever I get the chance!  It’s painstakingly slow but any small action overcomes analysis paralysis and gets me closer to where I want to be and how I wish to spend my finite time on God’s green earth.

Operation Scratch is definitely in motion!  Hoorah!
